Taste experiences
What we recommend you to try on the island
Lesvos is not just a destination.
It’s flavor, scent, and memory.
And for us, hospitality always includes a good conversation about food.
Here are some of the local treasures we wholeheartedly recommend you taste while staying on the island.
Ladotyri Mytilinis
A hard, spicy cheese aged in olive oil. Bold, aromatic, and perfect with crusty bread and wine. Traditionally made from sheep’s milk. Look for it in small dairies, or try it grilled in local tavernas—simply unforgettable.
Kalloni Sardines
Considered among the best in Greece. Small and rich in natural oils, they’re ideal for light curing. Enjoy them as locals do—paired with ouzo and good company.
Olive Oil from local varieties
Lesvos is home to more than 11 million olive trees. The island’s olive oil is smooth, fruity, and best enjoyed raw. You can purchase it directly from producers or cooperatives, it’s well worth it.
Ouzo – Not just a drink, but a way of life
Mytilene is the birthplace of ouzo. Each area has its own unique distillation—from Plomari to Kalloni. If you’re a lover of fine spirits, don’t miss a visit to a small local distillery for a truly authentic experience.
Vegetable dishes- ladera, gemista, fava, dolmadakia
Classic Greek comfort food at its best. Many tavernas use ingredients from their own gardens. Don’t hesitate to ask, “What’s fresh today?” or “What’s in the oven?”
Traditional sweets
- Rose petal spoon sweet
Made from fragrant May roses, slow-cooked in syrup with patience and love. This isn’t just a dessert—it’s a ritual. Served in small porcelain dishes with a glass of cold water.
- Amygdalota – Almond treats with meaning
In Lesvos, these are not just sweets. They’re memories, gestures of love, and part of life’s milestones. Served at weddings, baptisms, farewells, and warm welcomes—they’re a small, white, aromatic “thank you” that lingers long after the last bite.
What makes them special:
Ground white almonds (not powdered—still textured)
- Flavored with orange blossom or rose water
- Light syrup or powdered sugar to bind
- Shaped into hearts, teardrops, or cylinders
- Often wrapped delicately in lacy paper
According to tradition, the whiter and more almond-rich the treat, the purer the intention. That’s why they appear in the most meaningful moments of life. A gentle, sweet way to say “I’m thinking of you.”
- Miniature almond baklava
Unlike the usual recipes made with walnuts or pistachios, the Lesvian version uses ground almonds and orange blossom water for a more floral, aromatic twist.
Lesvos is not just something you see.You taste it, smell it, and remember it.
